I have short legs for my height, therefore I have to fold my hose more than once at the top. Combined with the addition of the traditional garter ties, it seemed to make the tops of my hose "too bulky" (at least to my eye). Having seen these mentioned in another thread, I thought I would give these a try. I'm hoping they "take less room" since there won't be a "knot" under the fold.

To reverse your question somewhat, I would be interested in knowing why, having tried the elastic garters, you did not care for them. (I am always willing to have my mind changed!) Did you find them uncomfortable, not "traditional" enough, etc.?

Would love to wear the tradional garter ties but unfortunately with 17.5 inch calves they just don't fit. So us more heroic stature types have to make do with what we can find.

I hope that you can sort something out Matt. I am sure that you would sell lots especially to us gents of substance for whom the traditional garter ties are no where near long enough

A wonderful sales/marketing idea. If you're good with the feel of elastic around your leg its a good deal.

For me, one of the benefits of the traditional garter ties is all day comfort when wearing them...

And, as discussed on an earlier thread its real important to know the size of your calf where you wear them and the length of the garter tie or elastic. Probably moreso the elastic.

I've many elastics for flashes that I have to max out to make them wearable and even then they are stretching causing unwanted pressure. If they don't tell you how long the elastic is at full length then ask them before you buy.

Vendors hide measurements on so much they sell. No clue why - think it would reassure the prospective customers...

Very easy to make with 1" elastic and 3/4" velcro. Cut elastic to comfortable length + 3-4", stitch on velcro. Voila.

I can get elastic garters off the net for a couple of pounds so not worth bothering making them as it would cost me more than that to get the materials.

What I would like is to see full length garter ties made for the more generous calf. At least I would feel more traditional then.

I would need at least 42-44 inch ties to allow for a 4 - 5 inch drop on the tassles. However my oh got me some which although very nice and well made by House of Cheviot do not come anywhere near this length so I have the choice to either wrap around once and have very long tassles or to cut them up and stitch them so that they will fit on to elastic garters.

These short "cheaters" (as I think of them) are also very quick and easy to knit. I get bored knitting full length garter ties but recently, the night before a kilted event, decided that Bob needed a particular color. Pulled an appropriate skein of yarn from the stash and knocked out a set of cheaters in an evening.

The ones I offer from House of Cheviot can be made to any length, so XL ones are possible. The Scottish Tartans Museum has some colors in 44" long ones. I just checked and they have on hand tartan red, ancient green, ancient blue, tartan green, ecru, charcoal, and black. Just call 1-866-898-1192 or email tartans@scottishtartans.org.

The garters I use mostly are two pairs of adjustable garters I got from Scotweb, months before I even had my first kilt.
The tabs that came with them come off, so I can swop them with extra tabs that I got my neighbour to make for me, using ribbon bought at a haberdasher’s.
I also have garters (fixed size) that came with my kilts, and have tartan flashes – I prefer not to wear those if I can help it – and a pair of blue flashes, also attached to fixed garters, that came from the Scottish outfitter in Cape Town.
    Regards,
    Mike
