I thought the purpose of the kilt pin was to cause discussions regarding it's purpose on internet forums

I have a Hiker Sport Kilt - 330 gm microfiber - super cool in the heat, but I use a 20 gram, 4 inch cross kilt pin on this one. Just call this fabric sail cloth because it does. Totally above my waist twice. I keep the pin on this one so I won't forget.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

Thanks for asking this one, I was wondering myself.

Interesting. I am a radio amateur too (GM4SVM).
Just joined the forum to say that I was brought up to use a non decorative kilt pin to go through both layers of cloth and pin the kilt together. The pins we used as children were non decorative and resembled large safety pins. My kilt maker always pins through both pieces of fabric. Maybe its because of the high winds we get here? Certainly walking down the street in an unpinned kilt would involve having to stop it blowing about.

I'd be very interested to know who your kiltmaker is , and why they are giving unusual advice. It really is a bad idea to pin both layers together, it restricts the natural movement of the fabric , and could lead to tearing the fabric.

For what it's worth I don't wear kilt pins anymore. I used to wear one of the typical pins that is a sword with the clan crest badge on it, but every one I had would break in some way, so I just got sick of it and quit buying and wearing them. I have seen some people wear cap badges as pins too. So I now just wear my kilt "nekkid" down there.

I don't wear them anymore either, HaggisMacJedi. However; for whatever reason, should I decide to, it will be my sterling silver, 4 inch blanket style kilt pin. I don't care of poking holes in my tartan any longer!
Cheers,

'Couple weeks ago, at the Highland Festival & Games in metro Chicago, there were to be conservative, 4 or so thousand folks kilted, from musicians to honour guard to gobs who minutes before purchased thier ulta-ready-to-wear first kilts, off the rack (and changed in the port-o-potty) sashaying about, oft with pleats-in-front or primarily on either side.
And for the first ime, ever...
...'saw more than a few wearing two to several pins. In varied locations and patterns.
In this opinion, kiltwearing "style" continues in largely "natural selection" evolution and one may expect (fear) to see more display of this "independent thought."
