Craig - The grey and whitish tartan HRH frequently wears is the Balmoral. It was designed by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria to be their exclusive family tartan worn by the Royal Family to this day. While it is oft pointed out that there is no law preventing you from wearing it, in or out of Scotland, it is considered exceedingly bad taste to do so. Although in America or elsewhere outside of the Commonwealth, I don't think most people would care as much.

Whatever the law may say------copyright etc,-------I would not give anyone much(any) chance of laying their hands on it, let alone wearing it, without the written consent of H. M.. I know of one occassion where a LARGE bet was laid on whether a kilt length of Balmoral tartan could be obtained-----------the attempt(a serious one) failed rather expensively!

Why on Earth would anyone besides members of the Royal Family even desire to wear the Balmoral tartan within or outwith the UK and the Commonwealth? It is a beautiful tartan indeed, yet as we're all well aware, it is also a restricted tartan. The latter sentence may have answered my own question.

Very interesting story about the balmoral bolt bet. I hadn't considered that the weavers of the cloth would not produce it for anyone but s/he who is authorized. So I guess you won't find one hanging around in a hire shop, eh? I suppose one could always weave one's own, but as it happens my loom is down for repairs and won't be back til a week from never <G>.
