New York Times travel slide show of Fernwood, with Freedom Kilts

A couple of weeks ago a reporter/photographer was wandering around Fernwood, which is the small community within Victoria in which Freedom Kilts is located. The photographer took a great photo (see Slide 5) of Steve leaning against the "tartan" telephone pole in front of the shop. Please don't ask me what the tartan (on the telephone pole) is -- I painted it with whatever colours I had available.

Woohoo! I was once interviewed by the New York Post and my bonnet size when up one. Steve's must have gone up three sizes!

Well, Bobby, that's no a tartan, but if a barber pole signifies a barber shop, that pole definitely says "kiltmaker". Good pic of you, too, Steve.

Actually of the over 150 photos taken of me that day I think this is one of the least flattering. I chalk it up to someone who does not know about the kilt and only wanted "artsy" photos of the strange denizens of Fernwood.

I had worn my X Marks kilt in that morning. That is why I have a gray shirt and gray hose on. But the photographer asked me to put on a kit that was brighter and more "festive". He wanted me to wear a Wallace Tartan but I did not have one in the shop in my size. So I grabbed one of our rental Maple Leaf kilts in P/V.

Stangely enough when I went into the shop this morning I had emails and phone calls waiting from people all over N. America who had seen the article and were inquiring about kilts. Too bad the NY times brings all the strange people out of the woodwork. ("I'm going to play golf with former President Clinton, I want a bright yellow kilt to distract him") ("Can you make a kilt for me but I don't want any of those pleat things in the back?") (I saw your article, too bad you don't make "real" kilts. I got mine in Scotland and it is in the only real Tartan.")

Steve, It still is a great photo, the shirt and hose still looks OK with the kilt.

The emails you cited show the ignorance of some of the general population. Maybe you should make up a kilt of the "only real tartan" with no "pleat things in the back". It looks like you have an untapped market out there.
