Thanks for that information, Dean. I had forgotten the place lay so far west. But the cops weren’t focused on the way anyone pronounces the name anywhere else – they were making it up as they went!
There is a farming area south of Grahamstown known as Southwell – it is pronounced as written, although the place in England after which it is named is apparently Suthell.
No accounting for placename pronunciation!

We play this game here all the time, especially with southerners. Many New England towns are named after English villages. Leicester being prounced "Lester" and not "Lie-chester". But we have a few Native American twists as well. I live on the Passagassawakeag River. Hint: it is not "Pass-a-gas-a-wa-keg".
