Well, Phil, I have no notion of what the origins of the lacing might be (yes, I freely admit it) but, to me, the way it is carried up above the ankle just looks so ghastly - and few guys seem to get it right anyway. Like plain white hose, Ghillie shoes have been much popularised by the kilt hire companies. To my mind, a pair of plain black, polished brogues serve the same purpose and look much smarter.
As Graham mentioned, Ghillie dancing pumps, for Scottish Country Dancing, are another matter altogether. But even with those, the lacing need not be taken above the ankle!

Thanks Hamish, that just saved me $150.00.

Richard, you are welcome - but don't take my comments as being the 'absolute truth'. I am just voicing a personal opinion.

I know and appreciate that. I need more support that Ghillies provide. The one time I did wear shoes for looks my back gave me problems for 3 days. I like the look of Ghillies but I have never considered then 'essential'. My wife tried to talk me into a pair a few weeks ago but while they looked nice I could not see me wearing them, much less the possible physical issues they would present.
I don't think the 'kilt police' will come and get me for not wearing ghillies but for me they just don't work.

For some reason when I see Ghillies I think of ballet or bedroom slippers. Maybe I'm just too used to heavy duty boots and shoes that cover and protect feet.
