    new 38" walking stick

Last Saturday I attended a Chutney and whiskey tasting event at our local Scottish Imports Shop. Ran into one other xmarker there, Lancer. While there was looking at items that I just couldn't live without and found this stag horn topped walking stick.
Obviously, as my new kilt has a stag horn kilt pin attached, the next logical accessory would have to be this walking stick, I mean, that is logical isn't it?
But the shop was unable to tell me what kind of wood the stick is made of. The attached pic is not very good but I hope maybe someone might be able to tell me what the wood is. It is a reddish brown color with a lot of little light colored spots all over it. The wood grain runs the length of the stick. Any ideas what it is?

It looks like it might be hazel, a very traditional wood for walking sticks. Very nice work, too.

I used to make a few out of hickory but it's too brown to be that . David may be right it could be hazel or sometimes chestnut is also commonly used . Very nice topper .

This image may not give you the answer you seek, but may help in the process of elimination. (That phrase always sounds slightly icky...)

Good luck--that's a great stick you found!

the color of my stick is very close to that shown as hazelwood but the hazelwood in the pic does not have all the little light colored spots. On my stick the small light colored spots are all about 1/16th. It looks like where hundreds of tiny branches were sprouting out, as plentiful as needles on a cactus.
Thanks guys for taking the time to answer my question. Also pleased that you like my new accessory.

I can't see clearly, but it looks like hazel to me. I am also not sure where in the world the shaft came from, but if it came from the UK, hazel can come in many shades, ranging from almost silver to deep browns.

The wood is definitely hazel, a very traditional wood for stick-making in the UK. Just to show you a similar example, this is a close-up of my cromach (sorry about the large pic size, but I want to show detail), which I purchased from a Welsh stick-maker. He made it from dark hazel. You can see it has the same flecks in it as yours.

Bingo----- Tobus, that is exactly the same as my stick. My stick is definitely hazel then. Whereas yours came from the "olde country", I am not so sure about mine. But at least when asked I can say what type of wood it is. Thanks.

That is a very handsome stick, Phil. Is that a walnut cap on the stag horn?

    Regards

    Chas
