Well, if this stick was manufactured in North America, as I suspect it was, the topper is Black Walnut, the stick is either Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) or Cherry-bark Birch (Betula lenta). The little white "flecks" are actually called lenticles, and while hazel does have lenticles, it lacks the ring-like striations that show in your photo.

Thanks for this info T.H. I am pretty sure that you are correct in thinking this stick was made in the U.S. and I now see that the stick that Tobus showed does not have the striations that you speak of that are definitely in mine.
Interesting! Learn something new every day, I suppose! Might be worth asking the folks at the store whether it is domestic or imported. If it's a Scottish import shop, it's very possible that they imported it from the UK.
Tobus-- does your stick-maker have a website?
