Kate Smith ruined "God Bless America" for me. She did such a fine job singing that song that other renditions pale in comparison.

That's why I prefer it! I actually like "God Save our Native Land", which is appears in the hymnal of the Episcopal Church.
But the "SSB" is also a "British" song, Vince -- the tune is actually a British drinking song.

Ah, but I didn't say that I was crazy about the "SSB" banner either. I don't feel that one need be a profesionally trained singer to be able to sing one's national anthem properly.
You do bring up a good point though. Many of our early 'patriotic' songs got their start as British drinking songs. I guess that tells me where our founding fathers spent most of their spare time.

Heck, the Pilgrims stopped at Plymouth Rock instead of continuing on to Virginia because they ran out of beer. The first permanant building they erected was a brewery.

Beer & kilts...

Even more so when you're in your kilt having a Tennants, McEwans Export, Newcastle, etc.
