Hmmm, what to do?

I'm wondering what you would do. A lovely couple gave me a kilt pin as a generous thank you for presiding at their wedding. It's a clan pin labelled "Carrick" on the back of the package, but the actual clan crest on the pin has the Drummond motto "gang warily"and what I think is an eagle (help me out here those who know). There was a celtic connection mentioned by the couple that is "carrick" related. My clan is Robertson. I'm mindful its a generous gift and I am touched by the sentiment very much. So, is there a connection between "Drummond" and "Carrick" or is the pin labelled incorrectly? And, it feels kind of strange wearing a crest kilt pin that is not my clan... What would you do?

We have a valuable 'Toby Jug', that was given to us by Aunty Katie. We bring it out once a year when she visits.

Carrick is indeed the name of the manufacturer of this piece. They are located in Glasgow. We used to carry their items once upon a time in the Scottish Tartans Museum gift shop. They made a range of kilt pins and crest badges -- pot metal, nickel plated, nothing fancy. They were imported at that time by Clarkes Scottish Imports which have since gone out of business. We stopped carrying the line when Clarkes shut down, which was several years ago.

I believe Carrick also offered their clan badges and kilt pins in a sterling silver version, though. And they made other types of Celtic jewelry, as well.

Bottom line is, the gift was a nice thought, but it is a clan Drummond kilt pin, and unless you have some kind of connection with the clan, I doubt you'd feel like sporting their crest on your kilt very often. Just because someone gifts you with something does not obligate you to keep it forever.

Say thank you, let you know you appreciate the thought. But at some point in the future I'd recommend finding a Drummond who could get much more use out of it than you will (and you'll have one less thing cluttering your dresser).

If you have a mind to wear it and there is any question about it, you can truthfully say that it was a gift from two dear friends and you wear it for their sakes.

It is not as though it is a cap badge, after all.
