I try to wear something I feel comfortable in and that matches the formality of the occasion and my husbands level dress. Be that a dress, skirt, slacks or even jeans I always know who I am leaving with!

I wear my tartan skirt. I'm the only "kilted" one though since my fiance doesnt wear a kilt (this will change someday. He eagerly awaits his future kilt).

A tartan sash in a nice dress works nicely as well, for formal occasions.

A kilt is a garment, not a costume. We women should wear a garment that is appropriate to the event that the kilted gents are wearing. What isn't okay is wearing a "costume" such as a Regency gown or some idea of peasant (tavern wench) dress to an event that doesn't call for that. A tartan sash, scarf or skirt is great. CMcG's partner is lovely and spot on. Well done.

A few people have mentioned tartan sashes, which is what my mother would wear over a cocktail dress when she goes to a Burn's Night. Sorry, no pictures

My girlfriend has mentioned being interested in getting a tartan sash and, needless to say, I'm working on it

I agree with vmac, but I have to say that there are a couple of pictures of gents here on X Marks with their lasses dressed up in kit that has a strong "Renaissance" flavor, but weren't attending "Renaissance" events. Those ladies look fantastic, IMHO. I will say that I think that a little bit of "Ren" goes a long way, though, for most women, at most events. However, if if a woman is not comfortable and conversant in clothing like that, I would NOT suggest going out and buying some, just to have something to wear with your kilted gent at "non-Faire" occasions.

My wife always asks me which kilt I plan to wear to an event. She doesn't try to be all matchy-matchy, but she does try to colour-coordinate so we don't clash together.

Here's an example from a friend's wedding some months back. (I was the best man, and specifically requested to come kilted). I chose Maple Leaf tartan, as this was November in Japan, when all the leaves were turning and matched my kilt perfectly. My wife also chose an autumn motif.

I don't have a good photo of us together, but here are two photos of both of us from the same event:

I would say that entirely depends on the situation. If it is a highland games, she dresses casually and comfortably. Usually for her that means blue jeans, but it can also mean a skirt. Sometimes she may wear a tartan sash, but not always.

If it is a Burns Night Dinner or some other more formal evening function, then she will wear a nice dress, and either a tartan sash, a tartan stole, or one of her knit shawls.

The first two are from different Burns Suppers. The last from a Highland Games.

Sometimes it is more important for a wife to match her husband's outfit than others. In 2009 Sir Malcolm MacGregor of MacGregor and his wife Fiona were in attendance at the Stone Mountain Highland Games and I had the opportunity to snap these two photos on Saturday and Sunday. I think Lady MacGregor's sense of style is very timeless and graceful, and perfectly suited with what Sir Malcolm had on both days.

What did my wife wear to those Games? Blue jeans and a cardigan!

Wearing our tartan together is not something we go out of our way to do at the same place during the day, but sometimes it happens.
