The Rise of the Cilt

Things are much more exciting these days now that I wear a cilt as much as possible. And I am amazed to see so many others taking up the cuase, even out of curiosity.

For instance, I went to the Grey Fox Bluegrass festival in Oak Hill NY a week ago. Thursday night I donned one of my cilts and proceeded to proudly strut and judge all the robots walking around in ther pantaloons. Sure enough, I bumped into two other guys wearing cilts. A USA and a Utila. We struck up some whitty banter, then I headed over to the Amerikilt vendor. Mike from Amerikilt smiled as I sauntered over and he proceeded to thank me for wearing a kilt(even though it wasn't one of his.) He told me bussiness was good, and the festival scene was a good suppliment to his online bussiness.

Sure enough, by Friday, I saw no less than 15 - 20 more people walking around in Amerikilts. God bless the cause.

Two nights ago, I went to the Irish festival in Glastonbury CT. I almost didn't wear a kilt (God forbid). I wanted to wear my new Amerikilt, but it wasn't dry yet. Fortunately, My USA saffron semi-trad was ready to go. I called my buddy and told him he better be wearing his. There were a lot more people cilting this year than last. It was nice to see. Supprisingly, I was the only one in saffron. The only odd point was when some guy in a cilt said he liked my Utilikilt. I forgave him the mistake and we shook hands.

So, in short, I am personally enjoying this boom in cilt wearing. And I hope to see more.

Me too. I have been told that there is another kilt wearer around here, but have not seen him or found him on this site.

Very true that there seems to be more kilts about town. Unfortunately for these parts (Dayton, Ohio), that means spotting one "in the wild" maybe just once every two or three weeks. There were definitely lots of kilts last weekend at the Dayton Celtic Festival, but I would categorize many of them as being in costume for the event, regardless of the kilt they were wearing -- traditional, semi-trad, contemporary, etc. Hopefully, some of those kilted for just the weekend get over their view of the kilt as costume, realize how comfortable the kilt is, overcome whatever fears they have, and go kilted at least once a month.

I am aproaching my two year anniversary of kilting always. When I got my second El Kommando, I decided to try kilt emersion and only wore kilts for a month. By the end I was totally hooked and never looked back. The addiction is at 52 kilts and $11,000 plus. And I don't wear the "costume" pieces! - yet

I don't even know that I see someone else wearing a kilt that often. When I do it's normally to some sort of festival in the area. I had the same observations from the Celtic festival; it was mainly people that it was pretty obvious they had either bought it for the event or that this one time a year is the only time it ever comes out of the closet.

I wear my kilt at least a few times a week here in the wilds of Northern New Mexico.
Tonight I was at an event for the Kit Carson Museum (he of Scottish heritage), and had 4 different men seriously speak to me about where to get a kilt, 2 of them had been instigated by their girlfriends!
I did not get "THE" question, which is unusual, but did get the best kilt check of my 2 year kilting career. Whew...

The event was a speech by David Remley, author of "Kit Carson, The Life of An American Border Man". It includes a great deal about Kit's Scottish heritage and how it impacted who he was. I highly suggest it over "Blood and Thunder" by Hampton Sides.

Amazon has what appears to be a pretty good write up on David Remley's "Kit Carson, The Life of An American Border Man" Am always leery of bios that don't show the good and the bad side of a real person. They are always biased revisionist works based on popular fictional accounts of , in the old west case, eastern wordsmiths (paid by the word) who never lived west of the Mississippi river. This includes most of todays "history" texts. We live a bit too close to the scene to buy the BS - I hope. This looks like a real bio from credible first hand sources.

I too hate it when certain wind turbulance raises the kilt ... just avoid walking in certain areas :-)

I passed a guy crossing the street last week - he had a sort of black outfit and perhaps a black utilikilt.

Another man was walking with a woman when the tall ships were here ... I don't know the tartan but it was colourful and he had matching hose.

in 2 months it will be my one year straight of wearing only kilts outside ... hopefully I can get a new kilt as a prize :-)
