Good suggestion, Phil. I lived at Ulbster a few years ago during a dig at Loch Watenan. To get to Whalegoe, guardsman, look for the call box right on the A99 and take the short road beside it down toward the cliff-top. There's a pathway near the road-end. There are several caves down there at the beach used to store barrels and nets in earlier times, too. The whole area is littered with brochs, cairns, chambered cairns and standing stones. An exploring walker's paradise.

Guardsman, a little late response but include me in your gang as another one that likes white/off white hose and ghillie brogues.
Also I couldn't help but notice in aother thread today of the lawn party at Balmoral Castle that white hose seemed to be predominant.

Perhaps a typing slip, but the model was actually wearing ghillie brogues, he wasn't wearing brogues.

ankle boots revisited. i was looking for something else entirely and stumbled across an oc richard comment about how common ankle boots once were:

dale seago linked to a thread about "ankle brogues" from a thread about "my official kilt shoe":

so, where do ankle boots/brogues fit in the pantheon?
