Well, one step closer to a decent outfit; won an ebay auction for a dark brown leather sporran. They say it is an army issue one but I'm not too sure. But I like it anyway so whatever



I'll get a pic of my brown high army boots tomorrow too. I like them but they might not look great under a kilt - we'll see..

A very serviceable sporran. It should go well with the boots, regardless of the British Army preference for black leather rather than brown.
After all, you are a civilian. What the military decrees can be taken as a guide, if you wish, but it does not bind you at all.

What I was trying to demonstrate was that Highland Dress had black shoes and brown sporrans from the get-go, as far as the pictorial evidence goes. This fashion apparently travelled into the military (rather than the other way round) because it was well-established in civilian Highland Dress prior to the formation of The Black Watch.

That situation probably had a very simple origin: shoes were usually black at that time, and sporrans were usually deerskin.

What's cool is that this very old style (dating back to our earliest depictions of Highland Dress in the late 17th and early 18th centuries) soldiers on to this day.

The situation was obviously moot during the 19th century during which hair sporrans were the norm. But by the 1920s it had reasserted itself.

Looks like it could well be a military one! Here's one like it in situ worn by an officer of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders

Mike, I was indeed thinking of checking if I can find a tweed jacket I can shorten to wear with my kilt. Might take a while since I'm still losing weight and buying something that fits me right now might not be in my best interest

Also, in the picture OC Richard so kindly posted I notice the jacket is not really short, just rounded on the underside to provide some room for the sporran. I think I like this style...

The jacket should be short enough so that it doesn't cover the pleats below the fell (sewn portion).
