Going For Gold!
During the progress of the Olympic Flame through Wales it passed very close to the Pontypool and Blaenafon Railway upon which I am a volunteer.
We wanted to lay on special trains for the occasion but were denied by the powers that be for "Security Reasons."
However, on the Jubilee Weekend in June one of the Torches used was brought to the station so several of us posed with it including my kilted self so here are a couple of pictures to mark the occasion.

And a group photo too.

Better late than never!

Excellent pics Trefor.
Thankfully, the torch relay with all its disruption, came nowhere near here though it passed close to the Bearsden and Milngavie Highland Games while I was there and I did get a photo afterwards of one of the athletes with three young pipe band members after his torch had been extinguished.
The security around the actual flame alienated a lot of people. Some of the video on the BBC of the thugs who escorted the torchbearer assaulting women and children who strayed into the so-called security bubble were absolutely appalling. The torch relay alienated a lot of people and I think this why many of us on the British Isles chose to ignore the olympics when they actually took place.

Yes indeed Alex the security was ridiculous at times.
One of our rail bridges runs over the road that goes to Big Pit mining museum where the Torch was to take a lunch breather and we wanted to put a train on the bridge as it went under.
This was refused point blank by the powers that be.
We also have a branch line to Big Pit but were refused permission to have a train there either. Naturally this placed us amongst the ranks of the disaffected. But getting the Torch, even with the flame extinguished, did cheer us up and helped us see the difference between the true Olympic spirit and the over protective and regulating bodies that that were in charge of the Relay. Heck they had plenty of backup flames contained in Miners Lamps in any case!
