I have a surplus close by as well. I hope to
pick one up in the next couple of weeks.
Not meaning to be nosey But did your hat see
some action? I knew you served in the military but
I wasn't sure when you were in.

Yeah, it went through alot with me. I'm kinda attached to it. It's the last bit I have left of any of my uniforms.

Sorry Bubba... I know this is none of my busines but but might I be so bold as to suggest that your lowly hat is a family heirloom. It is every bit as important as medals, photos or letters home to future family members. It must never be thrown out. IMHO.
I guess I've become a bit of a sentimentalist as I get older. I guess my sense of what's important has changed.

The most minimalist(?) I have ever been has been just the kilt and nothing else - usually when on holiday/in the garden on hot days when friends have just been wearing shorts (UK version!).
Sadly the body beautiful is no longer presentable in public like this, so this practice is now restricted to the privacy of my own back garden (and no, there is no way I'm going to post a pic of this).

Bubba, those hats were called bush hats in the uk in my youth, and the only bit of uniform I've retained is the boots. I've been wearing boots in one form or another for 30 years, the only concession being the gym. I mean it, on honeymoon in Crete, 120F I walked to the beach, along the beach and back from the beach in black combat boots I have two pairs of footwear, black boots, and trainers, thats it.
KML, I'll certainly post about the Akubra, I just don't think it suits the kilt. I hope I'm wrong but if not I still wear jeans 2-3 days a week, sometimes more.
Reading that back looks quite cool, I wear trousers less in a week than I do a kilt 8) Having said that I still like the option.
Cheers Rhino

blu, you could look at it that way. It's battered, stained, even has a bloodstain, is ragged and has holes that aren't regulation. I keep it in a plastic sealed bag since I'm not permitted to wear it. Yeah, it'll be around at least as long as I am. You can't believe how disreputable a hat can get without disintegrating.

Rhino, I wore out my issue boots so long ago I hate to count the years. I do buy new ones as needed though. I like the leather boots better than the hot weather boots in this climate. To give you an idea, since I got out I've gone through 1 pair of the old style jungle boots, 1 pair of Corcoran jump boots and 2 pairs of regular leather field boots. That isn't counting what I was issued

I'm feel the same way. In my case, it might be taken as disrespectful!

In my case disrespectful doesn't come close. Obscene would be going in the right direction.

A new hat is just another new hat. Your hat has true grit and it's one of a kind.
