Was the more faded on display and the other not? Was it in use more than the other?

Wild guess: Top of a cushion; bottom of a cushion. The puckers in the fabric are where it was button-tufted.

No but you're on the right track. What else might it be?

And the prize goes to . Not a wild guess at all. There's no evidence of any buttons though so the puckers are either damage or weaving defects.
Now that we've sorted out the re-use, what about the original cloth, use etc? There's more to work out.

Really?! A seat cushion? That was guessed way back in posts #21 and #22 of this thread. We could have saved a whole lot of further wild speculation...

22 in particular - missed that - opps. But more to the point: what was it originally?

Two pieces of tartan sewn together.
Is there really any way of knowing? It would have been something that needed to be wider than one width of woven fabric, but even then that doesn't narrow the field by all that much. Though it would have been something still whole, otherwise there wouldn't be enough fabric to make something else out of it. The obvious things would be great kilt, curtains, bed hanging. But even then, the only requirement would be something larger than the cushion itself.

Was it part of a kilt? The tabs on the one side for waist ties?
