Even if they are only fashion plaids I think they will make very nice looking kilts.

99% positive they're bumbees (fashion materials). If you look at the grey one, the red stripes are only running warp-wise (horizontal) and the grey stripe only runs weft -wise (vertical). It's not UNHEARD of (think Welsh tartans), but it is uncommon.
The other tartan isn't one I've ever seen before.
