The 1990s had those bumbee tartan shorts also. I remember several times wearing a kilt in the summer time and people not noticing for quite some time. When they did realize what I was wearing they all said they thought I had been wearing plaid shorts like everyone else was. It was the walking around that gave me away.

I did notice sporrans being worn with plaid knee length shorts and kilt hose and flashes on a couple guys at the Central NY games last month. Turns out they didn't want to spill beer on their kilts, which they had in their car. I have to say that I didn't notice they weren't in kilts right off as they blended in pretty well.

Up here in the rarefied air of the Highlands of Norfolk, I can say that I have not noticed a trend, but then again we have been blessed with an exceptionally cool and wet summer.

    Regards

As I went to school in Sandwich in Kent back in the 80s, every summer we had coachloads of American tourists, neck bedecked with several cameras, tartan flatcap, Hawaian shirts and tartan shorts - yes, the archetypal image of 'US tourist' in films.
Every time I hear someone say 'Gee, its just so quaint', I still cringe mightliy.

I'm not in anyway a 'USTouristophobe' or whatever the proper term may be, I have some very good friends who are American (and none of them dress that way and some have said they hate that image as well), but that image has really stuck in my mind.

No offence meant in any way, BTW.

    Me too!

I've seen many youngsters wearing these shorts, and let me say they just don't look right unless the waistband is halfway down their butts.

I wear them. Usually in the madras style. Very smart with Sperry top-siders and a button-down Oxford.

Ah yes - only down here in the rolling open ranges of the Misc section is the term plaid bandied about so freely.

It is a useful term in the fabric shops of England, as a plaid fabric is cheaper than a named tartan unless it is in some exotic fibre such as cashmere or silk.

I've been seeing these around campus as well, but couldn't remember Madras. And fashion revolves at about 40 years.
I've found that most relationships work best when no one wears pants.
