Well, the Sikhs have taken to the kilt & tartan, mostly due to Lord Singh, a Sikh gentleman who owns Little Castle near Glasgow. Lord Singh, a great deovtee of Robert Burns, had the bard's work translated into Punjabi, and is leading the campaign to rename Prestwick Airport to Robert Burns International. He also has designed a tartan for the Sikhs, known as the Sikh tartan. See this web site:
http://www.spiritborn.net/index.htm
The Sikh Regiment in the Indian Army wears the Rattray Tartan, in honour of Rattray's Sikhs, and the Clan Rattray Association still maintains close contact with the regiment.
The Gurkhas (now down to one regiment) wear the Douglas & Stewart Hunting tartans. They are Hindus. The Jordanian Army has a pipe band, the same with the Sultanate of Oman and Singapore contingent of Gurkhas. Jordan, Singapore and Oman have large Muslim populations.
I think the above examples are great and proof of how generous the Scots are with their national dress!
Bear: please don't get me wrong; I don't think for a minute that kiltmakers should refuse sale to anyone -- I was simply trying to point out that the kilt is "traditionally" a male garment. No offence intended.

Episcopalscot,
No offense taken here. I was just trying to show another viewpoint of the discussion. (People often think I'm offended or angry when I write bluntly.)
I agree that the kilt is traditionally male and would look odd on a woman at a formal social function.
I have read posts by kiltmakers who state they will not sell a kilt for a woman to wear. I was trying to point out that this attitude was similar to not selling to any given ethnic group.

Bear...
Good. One of the problems with electronic means of communication like this is the inability to see the person's face, body language, etc. It's easy to mistake emotions because we are only writing our thoughts with no visible emotions behind them (whew -- hurt my head to write that sentence!)
Lesson for Todd: Use emoticons more often!

I'll tell you what... if you want to try a kilt on your better half, the BearKilts are awesome! The way that they're made with the "hip riding" fit, as long as the waist, hips and length are measured correctly, they drape perfectly on a woman! That's not necessarily true with other kilts.
Stacey will cinch-up my BearKilt, and don the tartan once in a while. The kilt hangs perfectly and holds the pleats like a dream.
Hey Bear, ever considered a fishnet kilt?!

Jimmy,
I think you spent a little too much time at the Celtic Fling this past weekend.
Maybe staring too long at the Wailing Banshee's?

Mmmm you raised an interesting point Jimmy, I was posting from the point of view of modern kilt makers, ie, hanging from the hip. I honestly never thought of traditional kilts. They probably wouldn't look much good on a girly.

Well, now, of course I am going to put in my two cents. :o
I DO wear a kilt, and not a ladies 'pleated skirt' (or whatever you may call them), because my opinion is that they make me (and most younger women) look frumpy and matronly. On the other hand, I have seen some men who look absolutely ridiculous in a kilt, too. So, I guess, to each his own. I believe in tradition, but if you men had your way, we women would not own one pair of trousers, and would still be stuck in skirts! I think that we should all wear what makes us comfortable and proud. I would never knock tradition, as there is a time and place for everything, but, jeeez.......I have not reached an opinion on the sporran issue, but I do believe (and I am agreeing with Bubba here) that women do need some type of little rectangle bag or such for our 'bits and pieces'. After all, carrying a handbag looks absolutly ridiculous.
And that's all I have to say about that. (And of course, with my respect to all of you...........
