Hi,
If I understand the question you want to know which tartan, based on surname or location is most appropriate. There are at least two, possibly more, lines of thought on that. First, your closest Scotish surname on your father's side or (if there is none) the closest one on your mother's side. Next, if the clan you self identify with lacked it's own tartan pattern you could do one from the locality they hailed from. Alternatively you could chose the one which pleases you best and wear it. No rules (for the Scottish diaspora anyway) just right!

From what you have told us, I see no reason why you should not go with Grant.
There are quite a few tartans to choose from:

Are but three of over ten.
Why not go to http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/search.aspx and start searching.
There are some real beauties there.

According to MacLysaght, Adair from northern Ireland is Scottish. The Irish Adairs are from Offlay near the middle of the island. Does this help at all?
