Late-Medieval Aristocratic Landownership in Shetland and the "The lords of Norroway"

Here is a very interesting page for those with a special interest in the historical connections between Norway and Shetland in the auld times.

    http://arkeologi.blogspot.no/2007/03...d-estates.html

Though its a blogspot it contains a lot of interesting and detailed info on both Shetland and the powerful families of Western Norway that ruled the islands.

You're welcome Tulloch, "Tollak" used to be a very common name along the most southwestern coast of Norway up until about 100 years ago. Maybe its a variation of Tulloch?

Yeah, you're quite right about that, Clan Sinclair and Clan Gunn up in highest of the Highlands and northern of the Islands also claim Norwegian/Scandinavian descent and I believe that some in Anglesay might have some viking blood running through their veins as well.

"Ryfylke" in the document above is the olden name for the modern county of Rogaland where Stavanger is the largest city. The local football team is called "Viking FK" (FC) and their offical supporter group is called "Vikinghordene" (The Viking hordes). There's a car ferry that goes back and forth from Stavanger to Aberdeen.
