    Scot or not??

I will start with introducing myself. My name it Matt, and I think I've turned into a Scot, and what better place to find out than here. It's been a heated discussion with my wife who thinks I am deluding myself and suffering from some strange mid life crisis. I'm just looking for reasonable arguing points so I can defend my purchase of a kilt.My grandfather from my father's side was a born Scot from the isle of Skye, and moved down to Chesterfield during the start of WWii. My father was born shortly after in Chesterfied. So was my mother. I was born in Stone (south of Stoke On Trent) so technically I was born in England. My wife insists that I am not Scottish, but British, and have no business spending hard earned money buying a full Mackinnon clan kilt, and I will be the laughing stock of the neighbourhood if I ever wear it in public as NOBODY else does.Am I a lost cause? Matt.

Welcome Matt from Southampton. Are you a lost cause? Definitely not. There are many people on here who are not Scottish nor are they from Scotland. We have many members from all over the world who like kilts that is why we are here. Many will tell you how comfortable and practical they are. How good they look, how many admiring glances you get from the ladyfolk and any other number of perfectly valid reasons as to why they choose to wear the kilt.

In your case you have a perfectly valid reason and that is your direct paternal ancestry which many of us would love to have. However you dont need a reason in reality because its an item of clothing. Does your wife wear jeans? was she ever a goldminer? is she related to Levi Strauss? There are many related posts on here from people such as yourself who question do they have a "right" to wear the kilt. Everyone has the right to wear whatever they want as long as decency laws are accepted. Will you look out of place in Stoke on Trent High Street. Possibly but then you wont see many kilted folk in the Highlands either. With the exception of our notable Jock Scott if you are ever in the vicinity of Fort William.

Feel free to wear the kilt and wear it with pride and remember the heritage that comes with it. Should you wear the Mackinnon tartan then learn about and respect their history so that when you do get asked the question as to why, you will have the answer.

Look forward to updates on your progress.

    Hello Matt,

Welcome to XMarks from the other side of the Atlantic in Norfolk, England.

Just because a cat has kittens in an oven doesn't make them bread rolls, does it.

You are what you are and all your wife's protestations won't change that.

    Regards

    Chas

    You are BLOSSOMING!! Enjoy it.

Imagine your fate if she were to wear some article of clothing that fit one of her ancestral lines and you ridiculed her for it....

You are so lucky to know so much detail of your heritage. Celebrate it!

Matt, your weife is way off base if she thinks that the neighbors will laugh at you for wearing a kilt. I worried some about that same thing when I first started wearing the kilt. I had lived in the same neighborhood for about 15 years before wearing my first kilt.
The comments that I got when first the neighbors saw me in the kilt were all: you look great, it suits you well, and the ever popular, I love a man in a kilt.
You have every right and should embrace your heritage. Get that MacKinnon kilt, wear it proudly as well you should and even your wife will come around to liking to see you wear it.

    Hi Matt and welcome.
You wife isn't quite correct in suggesting that nobody wears a kilt in your neck of the woods and that you would be a laughing stock. I live at Mississauga Road and the Lakeshore and regularly wear a kilt. No body laughs. Ever. But then, maybe that's just me. Glad to stroll by your place kilted, if you think that it would help.
