So "we" the kilt wearing community 'need' a certain amount of bandwidth to set a good example, but that bandwidth is paid for by a very few supporting vendors selling an already expensive product.

You raise a good question, but in this instance is the cost of internet bandwidth really an issue?

For example, if a single forum called "Miscellaneous" or "Meander" or "Whatever" is created that is exempt from Rule 12, will hordes of folks with little or no interest in kilt-related subjects flood onto XMTS to discuss other subjects, especially under the constraint of the other Rules that would still apply to the new forum? I doubt it, but I don't know.

Perhaps Steve and his server admins can give us their more informed opinion.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Think all the other forums I haunt have some sort of pub or lounge feature for unrelated posts. I think those venues help keep the main kilt forums more focused.
Seems like a perfectly reasonable plan

On behalf of the staff I would like to thank everyone who participated in this discussion. Your comments and suggestions were invaluable to us in re-writing Rule #12 to remove the perceived conflict.

After the last post of discussion within this thread the staff began their deliberations to work out the final wording.

    The Forum Rules now read:

    Rule #12
    - Off Topic Threads & Posts -
    a) The topic of discussion on X Marks is the kilt. Threads or posts not related to the kilt are restricted to either the Events or Community Forums.
    b) Posts to existing threads must keep to the topic set by the Original Poster (OP). Posts which take a thread off the original topic may be removed.

    This thread is now closed.
