If the buckles or something else that is metal don't set of the scanner they also select a proportion of all passengers for a search anyway. I get picked whether I'm in a kilt or not.

I recently flew from Singapore to Hong Kong and back in my contemporary denim SKILT for the first time. I chose it for the two roomy cargo pockets and lack of metal buckles. No problem here.

Of course, there is no accounting for the strange behavior of airlines:

Wondering why they would do that? If you dont set off a scanner, then you dont have any kind of "medal" on you.. Right? Then your not in any risk of "violation" right? If a scanner dosnt find anything, What will a set of hands do?

Things like ceramic-bladed knives and other such goodies wont set off a metal detector, since they contain no metal. Many such items are also x-ray transparent. That's why some are chosen "at random" when the metal detector fails to find anything. As for who they pick, it's debatable whether it's truly random, due to style of dress, or whatever other criteria. But I can think of lots of items that wouldn't set off a metal detector... even if they did contain small amounts of metal (such as hypodermic syringes).

The longer the flight it the better reason to fly in kilted comfort. Just common sense about the TSA part of the trip. Never wear them kilt pins with the long pin in back. I wear a clutch pin kilt pin (short back pins) and also take it off going through TSA. If you're wearing something like a Utilikilt with a lot of snaps try going through the scanner dealie sideways...sometimes works.

At the Belfast Airports the machine selects every Nth passenger as well as someone carrying something that sets of the alarm- the security guys told me this. They are very extreme here - you can be wearing the same things at other UK airports and sail through with no bother.

@ JRB, I fly all the time. I believe they mix it up between scanner and Metal detector to keep this NON-SOP.
Which, as a frequent flyer...I'm glad they do. I haven't flown kilted yet, But wouldn't flinch for a second to do so whenever I decide to. Again, No blade and Yes, undergarments.

I flew round trip this weekend from San Francisco / Dulles, wearing my Black Watch hybrid from got-kilts. got a very professional pat-down in both airports, with both agents doing their jobs perfectly, respectively and above all within a minute and a half. No issues either way.

At the gate in SFO the guard checking the ticket remarked he hadn't seen a 'green one, all I get are red ones.' Glad I got to make the man's day!
