Do Mitchells wear Mitchell
I understand the name Mitchell was attached to an existing tartan about a half century ago when the US Air Force pipe band began wearing it. Since that time have folks with the surname Mitchell taken to wearing the Mitchell tartan regardless of clan affiliation?

In a word, yes. When I searched in the Tartan Register's database, the name Mitchell comes up with that same tartan (shared by Russell Mitchell, Galbraith, Hunter):

It is a handsome tartan be it modern, ancient, or weathered
FYI, be warned that not all the Hunter tartans are the same as the Mitchell/Galbraith/Russell ones (for instance the one Sport Kilt sells as Hunter is similar, but not the same as the Mitchell/Galbraith/Russell.
Rocky doesn't mention it, but USA Kilts has the Galbraith/Hunter/Russell/Mitchell tartan in PV.

Here is one in the Galbraith Ancient in 16 oz. wool tartan by Matt Newsome (Locharron)

Panache,
Thanks for the photos. I have a great grandfather Mitchell and I can't place him in a clan. I thought some of my cousins might be interested in the history of this tartan and its connection to Mitchell. Also, my wife is a US Air Force brat although she is leaning toward the Air Force Reserve pipe band tartan. Thanks again for the photos.

For my educations, don't Mitchells also wear Ross?

Mitchells who trace their genealogy may find themselves in one of several clans including Ross. My question was based on me wondering what Mitchells who were unable or uninterested in tracing their genealogy were choosing to wear or how they were being steered by retailers. You make a good point, that with some effort some Mitchells may be able to find the clan of their ancestors, such as Ross.

Please forgive me for coming late to this thread, but I just joined the forum yesterday! My Scottish great-grandfather was Andrew Mitchell, so I decided after some research that the Mitchell Modern was the appropriate tartan for me. I understand that it is shared with the Galbraith, Hunter, and Russell clans or families, but there is no other tartan for our family name - unless we want a tartan from one of the affiliated clans. Mitchell is a sept of Innes (in most resources) and I considered their tartan, but the green and black of the Mitchell seemed more to my taste.
I am also aware of the fact that the tartan was first associated with the Mitchell name through the actions of the U.S. Air Force Pipe Band, and not through any family ties in Scotland. (There is an interesting article on the website of the U.S. Air Force Drum Corps: http://usafdrumcorps.us/pipeband/pag...n history.html) Even so, the Mitchells did not have a tartan before this, and ... it's a good story! Besides, it is a truly beautiful tartan, especially in the vibrant Modern colors.
After a few web searches, I decided to buy a kilt package from USA Kilts. On a Saturday afternoon in August, Rocky took over an hour to take my measurements, explain many of the details of Highland wear, and offer options. I am very pleased with my first kilt (in 16-oz. wool) , and am now considering a Semi Traditional kilt ... since the Mitchell Modern tartan is available in PV!
