    Post Kilt hose pain

    Hi all,

today I am seeking for some advice.

On the 19th of October my GF invites me to a Concert with Scottish Music at the Luxemburg Philharmonics because of my birthday which is on 23rd.

    http://www.philharmonie.lu/de/progra...etails&id=2295

Of course I am going to wear my kilt.(My GF really loves to see me wearing the kilt and wants me to wear it too. )

I thought of wearing my Argyll with waistcoat an black bowtie, fur sporran.
And I am going to order a new sgian at Comrie Crafts...Ebony handled with thistle ornament.

BUT! I am in doubt which hose to wear.
I thought of adding a bit of colour instead of black, charcoal or (forgive me!) off white. I just ordered a pair of red hose from Matt.

My kilt is Smith ancient. So what do you think or suggest. Any ideas about hose colour and flashes?

    Thanks Tom

P.S. My GF likes Ghillie Brogues and tries to convince me to wear some...
I would prefer normal brogues or plain Oxfords.

There's nothing wrong with off white kilt hose and black gillie brogues. They would tone with your white shirt and the laces really stand out against them. I really don't understand why people get so het up about this issue.

    Hey Freddie...thanks!
I don't understand either but I am not against having some nice alternatives....
In fact I find ghillie brogues a bit too folkloristic but if my GF likes them...

Dark hose with the yellow from the kilt for flashes, could be effective.

Black and white above the waist could be balanced by black and white (or white and black) on your legs.

Ghillie brogues are a pain to tie without a mirror to hand, or someone else to do it for you. Either they are too tight and cut off circulation, or not tight enough and end up in a knotted bundle around your ankles. You can spend an age getting the heights the same; take a couple of paces; they self adjust; and the heights are wildly different.

I have Oxfords and normal brogues (both in black and brown), they do for most occasions.

    Regards

    Chas

Pipersson , that is a beautiful tartan ! You have several options for hose and flashes that would look very good .

Given that you are going to an evening Philharmonic event ( I assume evening ) , my vote on hose would be in the green , blue or black color family and contrast the flashes accordingly with a stripe in the kilt . To my eye any of those would look quite smart . As a matter of fact , I think your choice of hose , flashes and tie in the picture is great and that look gives you something quite fitting with a splash of color .

I have nothing against white / cream hose for certain applications , it's just that at first glance , they often take my eye directly to the hose instead of the kilt due to the extreme contrast of color .

Regardless of what you choose , I'm sure you will look sharp . Have a great time at the concert and by the way , I'm with you on the shoe choice .

    Best to ya !

Your ensemble in the picture is great. If things ain't broken; don't fix 'em.

Often we can over think our outfits - yours looks very appropriate for an evening out. As to Ghillie Brogues, I don't think it matters. Just be sure to put a shine on whatever shoes you chose to wear.

I agree. If we take what you're wearing in the photo, swap out the red tie for a black bow tie, and switch over to the fur sporran as you described, it's still perfectly suitable. There is absolutely nothing wrong with green hose for an evening concert. As for the waistcoat, it's up to you. I think it would be fine with or without the waistcoat.

Ghillie brogues could be worn as long as they're polished, but this seems to be one of those things that some people like and some people don't. Apparently there is no consensus amongst Scots on whether they're really appropriate for evening attire. However, if your girlfriend likes them, there's always the option of wearing them with standard laces, not the long ones. I recently wore mine that way and found them quite comfortable. If you do buy a pair of ghillie brogues and intend to wear them in the evening, find a pair that has standard leather soles, not the thick rubber ones that are made for pipe bands.
