Thanks for the compliment. I do think it is because of they are so hard to come by these days though.

Thanks for the welcome to the club gentleman! I didn't actually expect to win this one. The last two I saw on ebay went for over $300. I put in my last bid an hour before the end of the auction and went to work. When I got home last night I was competely surprised to see that I won it. I will definitely wear the fawn colored bag that it came with. After saving some money, I'll have Artificer make a black bag for it.

Wow, Kyle, that's a beauty! Congratulations to both you and Scott on the fine sporran. Looking forward to photos of the sporran in action.

How excellent Kyle, looks like great leather that Artificer used there. With all these MoD cantles that Scott is resurrecting with superb bags, I think the current head of the MoD should at least mention him in dispatches. Congratulations Kyle on the fine acquisition

Congratulations, celt72- it's gorgeous. And welcome to the club. Membership costs seem to be going up all the time!

celt72, welcome to the MoD cantle club!
I think you're right, Tobus. These won't be getting any cheaper anytime soon. But one of the great things about brass is, barring a MAJOR accident, they'll practically be around forever. Maybe they'll fall out of fashion again in 50-100 years and our grandchildren/great-grandchildren can re-start the market

Just a thought but is it the fact that you do wonderful work that may be the reason that the price for these is going up, ie people are buying them because you turn them into a work of art. I know where I would be sending mine if I was ever lucky enough to get one.
I don't know if Harold and I are to blame, but I'm sure the constant threads on X-Marks are probably helping to drive up interest (and prices). I'm honestly a bit surprised that there wasn't more of a market for them in the past.

That would certainly be one for the scrap-book!

I sometimes wonder what the Highlanders who wore these originally with their "blasted blanco" bags would think of the new life these are being given.

I guess I'm just going to have to fly over to Scotland and start haunting antique shops and garage sales. Do they have garage sales???

Look for "boot sale" signs every weekend -- not a lot of overstuffed garages in the UK like we have here, but people gather in parking lots and sell stuff out of the trunk (aka boot) of their vehicles!
