Glengarries in unusual colours

If I liked Glengarries, I'd get a bright red one, just like my bright red Mackie Balmoral. Oh, well...

For those who are interested, I came across this site about a week a ago; how fortuitous. Glengarryhats.com. it doesn't say who the maker is, but that do have both Glengarry hats and balmoraks, although the balmorals have a smaller palate to choose from.

There are those of us in the UK, of a 'certain age', who were affected by clothing rationing or the aftermath thereof. We have all seen the posters recently "Keep Calm and Carry On". Well, there were others. One of which has burned its way into the collective national psyche - "Make Do and Mend". Clothing rationing only ended in 1949, but that did not mean that there were suddenly shops full of clothes. Many of the things we consider a fashion item now were born out of expediency.

Knitted ties, woollen ties, leather patches on elbows, knitted undergarments, knitted swimming trunks (there is a special place in Hell for the inventor of those).

So sayings like "A regimental tie goes with anything." come into focus. It will go with anything if it is the only tie you have!

The emphasis for so long was on being clean and wearing clean clothing, rather than wearing what was fashionable. Of course, when times changed and newer styles or clothing finally became available, not everybody wanted to change. They then had children and their children had children, but were constantly being influenced by previous generations. The rebelliousness of youth gives way to the conformity of middle age.

And of course, being men we all have a favourite shirt/tie/jacket/jeans/sweatshirt or what ever.
"What are you wearing today, Dear?"
"Old faithful, of course!"
"sigh"

I have one of the Balmorals from glengarryhats.com, and recently compared them to my Mackie (see here for full discussion). It is worth noting that the ones sold by glengarryhats.com (as well as by some advertisers here on this forum) are made in Pakistan, and have a much smaller crown and toorie than the Mackies. There are other construction details which are different too, like the fact that the Pakistani ones don't have the notch in the back, the ribbons are way too wide to be tied into a bow (and aren't stitched to the back in such a way that would allow them to be tied), and they use only black trim instead of matching the colour of the trim/ribbons to the rest of the hat. Overall, though, they are good quality at a decent price. And for folks who prefer a smaller crown, they actually work pretty well. The one I'm wearing in my avatar is from them. I can't speak for their Glengarries, though, since I don't wear that style.

The Balmoral in my avatar is also from them. As Tobus stated, not quite so nice as a Mackie in details, but quite serviceable. I did replace the supplied red toorie with a black one.
