I have been thinking how to reply here, to give guidance rather than crushing the new found enthusiasm. Its all a question of degree and whilst striped shirts do fit in with the traditional Highland look, although perhaps not so often seen, it is the "volume" of colour in the shirt, particularly with stripes-----not so much the tie------that makes the look work, or not and for me I think the shirt in the picture is more than a tad too loud. The tie is perfect for almost any event up to smart( not formal though) that you can think of.

Aha! I have white shirts with colored stripes in the man closet, probably 2 or 3. Also I have some new fangled solid color shirts I can't for the life of me describe. Plus I just got them, am near 60 years old and am feeble brained, so don't expect much! More pics soon. And don't mind me, I'm a newbie on a limited budget, and just looking for the rabble's comments, which of course are simply forthcoming!
Cheers! (Or cheese as the case might be...)

Amazon has a bunch of tattersall shirts on sale, so I found one in my size and bought it. It's a Savile Row men's navy, pink & white tattersall check formal dress shirt. they didn't have many in my size, so this was the only one on sale I could find!

But on that subject, it's not a universal rule that stripes can't be worn. Here are three photos from the Argyllshire Gathering and Oban Games (as posted by Kyle). I don't care for the look, but it's certainly not the kind of thing that will get you arrested by the THCD police.
Note, however, that these are basically white shirts with coloured stripes, not two-tone striped shirts that are dark.
Hmm. How can I reply without sounding OTT or biased in any way. I don't like the look. Maybe some people do, but I don't. In the second picture the guy is wearing a striped shirt with trews. It's still stripes with tartan, though. It seems in the last picture that the guy is wearing a Saxon jacket with a striped shirt and a kilt. Perhaps, just because it was done that day in Scotland (Argyllshire) doesn't necessarily make it "right" or "good"? I have to agree, though, with Jock's analysis.

Do you have a link for that sale?

That ought to do just fine, although I think I'd probably skip the pink elephant tie.
I don't know why, but lately I've really been wanting a yellow-based tattersal shirt. I have several with a white base and overchecks in various colours. But I really like the way that a yellow-based tattersal tends to give an 'earthy' tone to an outfit, especially with weathered/reproduction colours or jackets that are green or brown.

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree Tobus. I thought the tie was quite ugly.
From looking around the web, these shirts can be found in base yellow, but for the most part, they're outside of my meager budget.

I don't disagree with any of that. I'm not a fan of striped shirts with tartan. I was just pointing out that it's not an absolutely prohibited choice. The fact that three men were wearing it on the same day in Scotland says that it isn't just an aberration. But yes, just because they're wearing it doesn't make it necessarily in line with THCD.
But I'll bet if we saw HRH the Duke of Rothesay wearing one, everyone would suddenly jump on the bandwagon and be singing the praises of striped shirts with kilts.
