Clan Wallace has a nice tartan and is an open clan. They encourage the wearing of their tartan by anyone.

I'm more impressed with each comment by people. Was thinking Tartans were more exclusive, with the Wallace clan being so inclusive, damn. And they happen to have a gorgeous Tartan as well. Ya have me thinking about picking up one after I snag a Stuart.

    Cheers again folks

Although I'm not all that new to the forum, I'm still fairly new to kilts. So tell me, what's the general opinion of wearing a tartan from your mum's side? I'm Cheshire by name, but feel I'm just as much Lindsey. I've been able to trace my lineage back to a fellow named Landy Lindsey, born circa 1740 either in Scotland or James City County, VA. I trace to Lindsey DNA group 3, L0176. Thanks in advance.

My only clan connection is through my mothers maiden name and thats good enough for me. There are no laws governing the wearing of any tartan only restriction and convention out of respect for Royalty or Clan Chiefs. Some Corporations may get a bit huffy but they cant sue you for it. As many will tell you, wear whatever you would like too. Its nice to have a connection to a Clan but its certainly not obligatory.

Most clans accept maternal lines and, in some cases, married paternal lines. My mother's first husband, who was killed in the Korean war, was a Hannah. Clan Hannah offered me membership even though I have no blood link to this man. I am a member of Clan Cameron through a maternal link because my Grandmother's maiden name was Taylor.

    Hi Spuggs

Just so you're aware. There are certain people on this site who take a very dim view of those who wear tartans they are not "entitled" to. So much so they are prepared to call into question the character of people who don't follow the rules as they see them.

I wear a number of tartans, some I have connection to, some I don't, but I've found this hostility (I stress, from some quarters) to be tangible as well as quite offensive and insulting. So much so that I have severely curtailed my contributions here. Their self absorbed opinions bother me not one jot but I have no desire to have further discourse with them, hence my restraint.

My advice would be, you can wear any tartan you like, just don't post any pictures of yourself doing so, lest you too become a target for their wrath.

They seem to be incapable of the agree to disagree ethos. Not a problem for me, I respect them commensurate to their respect for me.

mate, seriously....if you refuse to wear anything that will offend someone, ever... you might as well go naked.

If you really, truly are concerned with not offending anyone, then there are about a bazillion non-clan tartans out there. Odds are fair to middlin that your State has a State tartan. I happen to dearly love the Holyrood tartan and that's not a clan tartan. My nicest kilt is in the Capercaillie, modern tartan and that's not a clan tartan, though it's "Scottish". How about the "Scottish National" tartan? The "Flower of Scotland" tartan? The list goes on and on and on.
