What MacFhearchair said.
Simply dropping a couple of hundred calories a day over the long term is the best choice. Make sure you eat real food, tho. This will enable you keep your strength and lean body mass.
Take up kettlebells. They are great for stripping off the non-essential body weight. Pavel's "Enter The Kettlebell" is a good place to start.

I think I'm just going to eat like a sensible human being and try to cut out most of the carbs. That's fine.
As for NASGA, that log used to be a serious motivational tool. That was back when I needed a little kick in the pants to get going. I don't need that any more. It's fun to track what you're doing, but I do that here. so we'll see. Nothing much but some rowing machine and sprints and stadium steps are going to go in my log any time soon, anyway. And I ought to try some kettlebells, too, if for no other reason than they're so popular and I don't know anything about them.

A week or two of strict paleo or primal will get you going better than counting everything.

Kettlebells for the win (FTW).
It's one of those "hear me now, believe me later" things.

I'm pimping www.sparkpeople.com again. The food tracker is great and has an enormous database of items.
My recent motivation?
I ordered some p@nts online, and they are a little tight in the waist. I'm keeping them as my goal p@nts.
*PS Apologizing in advance for discussing the demon p@nts on a kilt forum
;)

I just read through Matt Vincents training book, his breakdown of "blocks". upshot...there's no flippin' way I can do what Matt outlines in his book, not if I want to actually maintain my life as a life with like...you know, a job in it, and friends and other activities. Six days a week? No. Not happening. for one thing, my body won't take it. Lift hard until Thursday, and then one day is "plenty of time to recover"? No.... maybe when you're 25.
So back to drawing up my own off-season program.

Probably something like this...subject to much revision as the weeks go by...

Once mid-March gets here, it's time to start throwing Scottish stuff 2x a week, and lift 1x a week. That goes through roughly the middle of May. Beyond that, who knows? I can't plan that far ahead.
Oh, all Strength Phase and Speed Phase workouts are initiated with a dynamic warmup of 4-5 minutes of stationary bicycle or rowing machine, and they end with 4-5 minutes of stretching in the stretch cage...a change from the last two years, when I did stretching first, and cooled-down with the rowing machine.
