We have just passed a law.
It is now illegal to wear an Argyle Jacket anywhere but in Argyle, Scotland.
You may also not wear a Prince Charlie Coatee unless your name is Charles Edward Stewart.

Please turn in all your, now, illegal jackets to me.

There might be a sales push "somewhere" in Canada with jackets with Montreal cuffs, Sitting Bull coatees and Moosejaw bonnets.

When Argyll Jackets are outlawed, only outlaws will wear Argyll Jackets.

My new jacket from EBay has, as you see, two buttons and only one small button on each cuff. It is a Dark Green wool jacket from Moss Brothers ex hire and cost 20 GBP. Because I wear a Heritage of Wales kilt I have changed the buttons to matt gold buttons with a dragons head.
    What style is this ??

£20 you say. That is somewhat of a bargain. It must be the rare and fabled Merthyr Tydfil Jacket.

One of the things that has not been pointed out is that what we call an Argyle Jacket does not refer to the type of jacket but to the type of cuff on a kilt jacket.

You can see here, thanks to the image I lifted from the Lochcarron catalog, is that the exact same jacket can be made with three cuff styles.

The gauntlet style cuff we call Argyle Style.
The placket style found on a Prince Charlie Coatee when used on a kilt jacket we call a Braemar Styel.
And when there is a single or double button similar to a suit coat we call it Crail Style.

All of these jackets are basically the same pattern. Single button front, scalloped and buttoned pocket flaps, and epaulettes.

When made from Black Barathea and designed for more formal wear the epaulettes are usually braided cord.
Tweed jackets will usually have flat fabric epaulettes.

There are two more jackets that are sometimes seen.
If the jacket is made from Black Barathea but has a three button front it is sometimes called a Wallace Style.

And then there is a jacket which I have been selling for some time now that is similar to a Wallace Style which I call a Kilt Kut Suit Coat.

Here is the same jacket paired with a contrasting vest.

Very informative and timely (for me) post, Steve. Thanks.
I am roughly half done sewing a new kilt jacket from a modified sport coat pattern, and it is decision time for cuff style and number of front buttons.
I opted for fairly high lapels, wanting to give a respectful nod to the ghillie coat tradition. I will likely go with Argyll cuffs and three-button front.
