Scottish American Military Society Wreath Laying at Tomb of the Unknowns

The Post of the Potomac of SAMS will be laying a wreath at the Arlington Cemetery Tomb of the Unknowns at 1315 on Saturday, November 10th. DC, Virginia and Maryland XMarkers are invited to attended. Details below.

For persons wishing to attend as observers, kilts and tartans are the uniform of the day (Men: daywear; jacket and tie, Ladies: equivalent). The minimum dress code for those of you who do not have kilt/tartan is provided below, courtesy of Arlington National Cemetery. Although the guidelines are for those participating in the actual ceremony, the Post of the Potomac respectfully requests that those participating as observers of our wreath laying ceremony abide by these regulations at a minimum. Ties would be appreciated for men.

I look forward to seeing everyone at this event of honor and remembrance.

    With Fire and Sword,

    Ralph

Dress Code For Public Wreath Ceremonies

Personal appearance and dress of persons participating in ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknowns will adhere to the dress standards expected of such dignified occasions. The minimum standard is business casual, defined as:

•For men: A combination of collared shirt (such as a dress shirt or polo shirt), trousers (such as khakis or blue, green, brown, or black trousers) with a belt and appropriate shoes. A blazer or business jacket and tie can optionally be added.

•For women: A reasonable length skirt (knee length) or trousers of a non-denim material combined with a top that covers the shoulders (such as a blouse, dress shirt, or sweater set) and appropriate shoes are considered acceptable. An informal dress with appropriate skirt length is also acceptable.

•School uniforms will be allowed as long as an adult official from the school confirms that the student’s attire is in accordance with the school uniform policy.

The following attire is considered not appropriate for participation in the ceremonies:

    •Blue Jeans / Denim Pants

    •Ripped clothing

    •Athletic Wear

    •Patched Pants

•Shorts of any kind (except when part of an established uniform, e.g. School Uniforms, Scout Uniforms, Foreign Military Uniforms, and period Military Uniforms)

    •Tee Shirts

    •Tank Tops

    •Halter Tops

    •Underwear as outerwear

    •Shirts that expose the midriff

    •Miniskirts

    •Sneakers

•Open toed shoes (nice sandals [not shower type shoes or flip-flops] during warmer months for women is appropriate)

The Executive Director, Army National Cemeteries Program, or designated representatives, the Sergeant of the Guard, and Relief Commanders have the authority to prohibit a person in non appropriate attire from participating in a wreath ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

Really good dress-code, Geoff. Could be used here often.

I keep reading this dress code and it appears to require trousers for men. Do those specified authorities have the power to allow persons in non-appropriate attire to participate in spite of the regs?

Well, the Uniform of the Day for the participants includes clan or service branch kilt, so I suppose so. If I could be there, I would go in my kilt and expect no problem. But I have other obligations just then.

My post participates in this event as well, I hope I'm able to join them, I would love to take part in honoring our unknown veterans.
