    why so many California hats??

I suppose state pride is cool and all that, but isn't this overkill?

I've seen loads of people around here recently wearing hats bearing the California state flag (or some permutation thereof).

Just now I did an Ebay search and wowza there are hundreds of these things in every colour scheme imaginable:

Any other state, or country for that matter, have so many hats? Or is it just us crazy folks on the southwest coast?

If anybody is interested, the Bear Flag was the symbol of the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt... here's info and a photo of the original flag, at the lower right

I haven't seen the same here, but "The Commonwealth of Massachusetts" and the state seal are probably not going to get the same treatment. It just doesn't have the cool factor of the CA version.

Edited to add: I forgot about our "Masshole" hats, t-shirts, and bumper stickers, if that ain't state pride, I don't know what is.

Besides being a historical symbol of California, the Bear has been appropriated as the mascot of a certain demographic in much the same way the rainbow and even the kilt has:

The John Deere peaked cap seems to be universal in rural areas except ranch country. What is the best matching tartan?
