King Charles III, or something else?

Rabble, especially UK/Commonwealth members:
When HRH the Duke of Rothesay becomes king, will he be bound to be styled "Charles III", or could he pick another name, similar to the way each Pope chooses his own name? For example, could his regnal name be Wilberforce I, or Henry IX, or anything else he chooses?

This is a matter of simple curiosity on my part, and nothing political is implied. Thanks for your response.

I'm fairly certain that I've read this as well.

To the OP, the same article indicated that Charles is not likely to use "Charles", as there is a certain amount of unfortunate history to the name.

Also, my understanding is that each male in the royal lineage is typically given about 6 names that include several family names of progenitors, and that they typically choose one of those rather than their commonly used first given name. I seem to remember hearing George VI pronouncing such a string of names during some form of introduction in the recent movie "The King's Speech", and that even though Albert was his first given name George was among the others, and the one he chose as his name for coronation purposes. Really not sure of the conventions involved however.

Just a bit too soon to tell, I think. His full name is Charles Philip Arthur George (you may recall Diana bumbling through that at their wedding). Both George and Charles would be acceptable numbered VII and III respectively, because both George I and Charles I were kings of the United Kingdom. We'll just have to wait and see, won't we?

My guess would be George VII as well (Charles Phillip Arthur George). Not that it would matter but there have already been a Charles III and IV in the Jacobite Succession. Overall the Stuarts caused all sorts of ruckus for the Brits (Charles I, James II, James the 'Old Pretender', and Bonnie Prince Charlie). I'm willing to bet that the Duke of Rothesay eschews the name Charles for the purpose of reigning.

Prince Charles was asked this very question some 30 years ago.

"What regnal name will you use, when you ascend to the throne, your highness?"

"My own, of course.", was his answer.

Just which one of his own, he didn't say.

He is a very much a creature of habit and after 60+ years of being called Charles, I would be surprised if he changed it.
