Well, there is that whole divorce thing and marrying a divorcee. His great uncle abdicated for the same reason.

Then there is the whole monarchy issue in the commonwealth. Many commonwealth countries could live without a British king on their money.

Would Canada, Australia et al follow Charles? Would his kingship cause them to break from the commonwealth and become republics?

Keep in mind that the original question had to do with which name HRH might choose when he ascends the throne, not about the politics of the Commonwealth at that time.

Not the same thing at all - Prince Charles has already produced a legitimate heir, and a spare, with no taint of divorce attached.

The Monarchy does not cost the Commonwealth (or any part thereof) one single solitary penny - not one.

Yes they would and no it would not.

Prince Charles has been in training for this job for over 60 years and as good as William is and will be, he is just not ready. Charles has the common touch, but he didn't when he was William's age. I have met him and talked with him twice with a 20 year gap. He now knows how to talk with people so as to bring out the best in them. I hope that he lives long enough to ascend to the throne and I for one will be pleased the say Long Live King Charles III.

Just by the by, the last King Charles was known as 'The Merry Monarch' - not a lot of taint attached to that.

Does anyone know (not just guess) if the robe of state which the monarch wears occasionally (Parliament opening, sitting for a portrait, etc.) are "passed down" through the family, or does each monarch order up a new one?

The robes are modified, if possible, but they have to be made to fit. Prince Charles is a lot broader across the shoulders than Her Majesty.

All the Royal Robes are on public display and wear out just by 'being'. The parliamentary robes have been cleaned 60 times - once a year for the Opening of Parliament. What with daylight and dust and their own weight dragging them down they suffer. These robes are 60 years old and I would not be at all surprised if a new set were made for Charles on his ascension.

All the Royal regalia (crowns, sceptres, the ring, the swords, the orb, the spoon) have all been repaired and they are made of metal! The bowl of the spoon has broken off three times and has been re-affixed. So mere cloth does not stand much of a chance.

That reminds me of the story of a family who had possessed an ax since the 1700s. In that time it had only had three new handles and two new heads.

I wonder how many peers won't be attending the coronation because the family coronets and robes are long gone, pawned or moth eaten. There is a Viscountcy that exists within my family, a cousin, it was an Earldom until 100 years ago. New coronation robes and coronets are somewhere between £20-30,000., could save a few quid buying used coronets if their purchased now before the rush...... Doubt there's sufficient capacity in the rental market and those cardboard hand-outs from Burger King won't pass muster LOL!

Actually, Garrards, the Crown Jewelers, maintain a stock of peer's coronets for just such occasions.
