Will others follow?
Last Saturday my wife and I attended a black tie dinner and reception in conjunction with the opening night of the Austin Lyric Opera. As I had done a few times before, I went kilted and wore my PC. Generally, being the only one so attired, I receive and couple of nice comments. Usually these are from women and are of the nature "I love to see a man in a kilt." I don't know what was different, but this time I was overwhelmed with compliments, and many from men. They were curious about the kilt and I tried to answer their questions and encouraged them to consider getting one. I have a few more opportunities to attend similar events and I will be anxious to see if any more kilts appear.

Nicely done, sir! I was wondering how your event went. Sounds like it was a smashing success.
And if I didn't say it the other day, I really liked what you were wearing on Friday night at the Calling of the Clans in Salado. That jacket and bow tie combination were outstanding.

Thank you, Tobus. You set a very high dress standard for us living in the Central Texas area.

Excellent! More and more everywhere people are seeing the kilt and becoming more accustomed to it. You look grand.

Slowly but surely males will follow, at least I have noticed, so keep up the good work.

How cool! Thanks for being such an effective ambassador for our beloved kilt!
Way back in college I dated a violinist for several years and we attended many black-tie concerts and orchestra fundraising dinners and so forth and I always wore formal Highland Dress and got many positive comments.
Ordinarily I only wear Highland Dress while piping, but not having owned a suit for many years and never having owned a tuxedo I use Highland Dress for those rare formal occasions.

Apart from the expected, and mostly good-natured, "man in a skirt" and "what's under the kilt" jokes I've received nothing but good compliments on the occasions that I've worn my kilt to special occasions, and sometimes you can see the gears start to turn in peoples' heads. A couple of towns over from me, Athol Massachusetts (named by a settler from Blair Atholl, Perthshire) is celebrating their 250th year and people seem to have gotten into the spirit; a pub in town is having weekly kilt nights and I know several people who have purchased inexpensive kilts just to be able to participate.
