Gee, a scalpel is a great idea.

Back is getting better, thanks. Was getting bad sciatica in my lower right leg within the past week, like electric shock stuff, no fun at all. Just twinging now, so getting better. Not a spring chicken anymore, need to take it easy!

Good old midwestern U.S. cowhide (maybe from Missouri!), veg tan, double shoulder, 8-9 oz. Cut two more 3" blanks and two 2 1/4" for my acrylic kilt. Needed to get these done before big family party next Saturday, will work on others as time permits. Got my leather local from a guy who has a website and sells all over. Good fellow, check him out.

So I ordered a skiver. My only question is can I use it on a belt more than an inch wide? It's this one: http://www.stecksstore.com/servlet/t...r-Craft/Detail

I'd love to be able to skive the end of my 3" belts!

I have had good luck skiving belts with a very sharp wood plane. Problem with the narrower skivers is it's hard to get a uniform thickness and I've ruined more than one belt when teh skiver slipped at the edge.

I might have to give that a try, although I found with a careful and cautious approach, the skiver works well. I just bought a low angle plane to carefully scarf in new tops on ribs on my 1947 Old Town canoe.
