Thanks for posting that photo Deil the Yin! I have those identical socks and they fit the same on me, and I was going to take just such a photo to demonstrate.
I have a pair of plain "kilt hose" which are just as long, and have to be folded in the same way to fit.
About shooting parties, it's hard to beat this one, in 1869
(The same year some of The Highlanders of Scotland portraits were painted, and showing precisely the same sorts of dress.)
