Is there no such thing as a roomy full dress sporran?

I was reminded of this the other night, when I had occasion to wear my full dress sporran to an event, that I found it lacking. After wallet, keys and cell phone, there is room for little else (such as a small digital camera.) It just seems that dress sporrans in general, with their shallow gussets and generally small dimensions, are not very deep, and not very roomy.

Does anyone know of a manufacturer who makes a full dress sporran with a capacity more like a basic day sporran, and that doesn't cost the moon? Suit jackets of any kind are not conducive to wearing an additional piper's pouch on a belt, and I hate loading down the pockets of a good jacket with stuff that ideally could be carried in a sporran. Should I just consider a semi-dress sporran for all but the most formal of occasions, and otherwise forgo what amounts for me, to be a fur-covered codpiece?

I have the same problems. I have a few more items, like a pipe and a tobacco pouch that just fill out a sporran with barely any room left for keys, phone, and tiny wallet. I'd love to have a roomy dress sporran.

I have the same issues, I've been using my Thorfinn skunk fur Rob Roy with formalwear, so far so good.

Zardoz - That's a nice looking rig. I don't know whether I'm keen on Rob Roy-style bags in general, given the relatively small opening, but I like the flap method of access rather than a hinged cantle top, and the skunk pelt on yours is very nice! I think a full fur sporran in a shape closer to typical daywear kit, may ultimately be what I desire. There's a bit to think about.

Might there be other roomy alternatives to the typical full dress sporran?

I know the opening dosen't seem that big in that photo, but I assure you it is quite large!

Good gracious me how much sundry kit do you need for a formal event? Handkerchief? In a jacket pocket. Car key? Note, NOT keys, they can stay in the car and the car key can go in a pocket. Money? How much do you need? A few neatly folded notes can fit in a jacket pocket. Credit card? In the sporran. Mobile phone? Switched off I hope! Do you really need it for a formal occasion? Camera? A wee one could easily and unobtrusively fit in a jacket pocket and of course these days your mobile phone will probably have a camera. Should you be accompanied by a lady then her hand bag(purse) can be used to advantage too!

I recently had the tables turned on me in a completely unexpected way and my wife’s little wallet ended up in my sporran.

Please tell me there is some kind of Scottish legal prohibition on this practice so I may obtain a cease and desist order before the habit is firmly implanted.

There is no legal prohibition that I know of. There is a simple, effective and one off remedy though and that is, spend her money! However, that could cause certain other legal problems down the line.

Or just wear a full dress sporran. Evidently, there isn't room in one for more than a car key. ;)
