Scotweb also has a couple of "looks like a clan badge but isn't" e.g.

Cheaper here And yet cheaper still (no UK tax applied) if you select USA at the "change country" dropdown.

The Three cogs, Illegitimus Non Carborundum (Don't let the Bas...) variant is called "Machine" and is at the bottom of the "select clan" dropdown.

They don't have an image of it but if you go the the Show us your Kilt Pins thread, it's Pin 13 in Post #4. In fact there are quite a few pins in that thread (not just my posts) that would work equally well as a hat badge and might give you some inspiration.

A former band mate used to wear his US Army officer's cap badge (the eagle and shield) instead of a clan badge.

I would think anything about 3 or so inches in diameter (or square) would do. Any larger runs the risk of weighing down the hat. Any smaller would look more like a lapel pin put on the hat by mistake.

A bit pricy, but with some rather unique badges/pins is this outfit: http://www.nagleforge.com/scottishpins.shtml

The website shows only a fraction of their offerings. They are a regular at renaissance festivals and some highland events.

Here's one I recently picked up. The pic doesn't really do it justice. The pin has very high relief.

I have a brass pennanular brooch I wear on my daily Balmoral. It is great for holding a sprig of Juniper. I have several pins I got on ebay including a pretty penanular sterling pin with griffin heads. I would search for penanular brooch, Iona silver, John Hart. There is some really nice stuff at reasonable prices.

These are three examples found quickly. The one with the Griffon is the same motif as the one I found and have had for several years.

I often wear an Eagle, Globe and Anchor, USMC emblem as a hat badge.

I wear the red Jerusalem cross on mine. It serves as the emblem of my primary reenactment troop so it seemed like the thing to do. I would say to keep your eyes out for one that says something about you. If you like historical badges that are distinctly non clan, you might find this interesting. http://www.revivalclothing.com/pewte...ckpewters.aspx

Just remove the cockade, cut off (or tie up) the ribbons, and wear it as a hat. Any "jewelry" you attach to it runs the risk of making it look like a lady's beret with a pom-pom.

I finally made my decision, and got a badge and a balmoral. I decided on the Machine badge, and ended up with a green balmoral. Here is the hat and the badge.

Thanks for all the help. I'll post pics of a full outfit once I get some.
