Hello from Fife in Scotland
Hi there, I hope you'll bear with me as this is the first time I've contacted a forum. I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I'm looking for knitting patterns for kilt hose. My daughter's partner is looking to invest in his first kilt and I'd love to knit his first pair of socks. I'd also like to know if there are specific patterns for each clan.
Many thanks

I am going to answer a question when I really don't know what I am talking about, but since there are thousands of tartans I would doubt there are hose patterns for each. I have, however, knitted a pair of knee high hose in an Argyll pattern. Other patterns may be available. You could choose the prominent colors in the kilt and use those.

Hello from Connecticut USA. There is a book on knitting kilt hose titled "Knitting Scottish Kilt Hose and Hiking Socks" by Joanne Gibson Hinmon. It is available from Amazon.com. Hope this helps.
My GGrandparents were from Markinch,Fife.

Fife in Scotland !? You know a lot of us envy you, don't you?
Welcome from the mountains of northern New Mexico!
You might try the book, "Designs for Knitting Kilt Hose", which you can obtain from ...

I know nothing about knitting, especially kilt hose, but I got the idea from Matt Newsome, Director of the Scottish Tartans Museum in Franklin, North Carolina.
Good luck, and post a picture of your daughter's partner in those hose, if you can.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

many thanks, I'll look into that. Isn't it a very small world. My Ggrandparents on my fathers side also came from Markinch. I discovered this when tracing the family tree. I now live approx 2 miles from Markinch and have a lovely view of the old church from my house.

you may not envy us at the moment, it's cold and wet (or "dreich"- pronounced dreekh)!!!
I do a lot of knitting and like to keep my hands busy when watching T.V. Also we need cosy jumpers for the winter weather.
I'll certainly post a photo of the finished hose.

many thanks for your reply. It's just the basic pattern for shaping that I need. Now that I know there are not specific patterns for specific clans I can make my own cable designs.

Welcome from Presqu'ile. Pictures of your jumper and hose will be good; love to see them.
I have relatives in Freuchie, by the way.
