Yeah, thanks alot Phil. Thanks to you and your pictures, I started going to the gym this week. I worked my triceps too hard yesterday, since it was the first time in months, and now I'm stuck looking like a T-Rex today!

Well, I guess you don't have to worry about where to put your hands for awhile.

I hate gyms, what a waste of effort and energy, I'd rather put it to a more serious use - such as cutting firewood, building something or just walking in the mountains with my wife.!

I started hitting the gym 3-4 days a week after I quit smoking. What a difference. I now get ansy if I don't have a good workout every other day or so.

Oh well! I suppose I might as well chuck my fivepennyworth into this thread!

Pockets: That may be one reason why I like my Utilikilts so much - apart from my leather one, all the others have wonderfully deep and capacious pockets that I can plunge my hand(s) into whenever the urge grabs me. Who, by the way, are all these people who cannot reach those pockets? I have no problems, walking along with my hands in those cargo 'sacks' attached to the kilts! As others have said, when there are no pockets, the kilt belt or the sporran belt make wonderful repositories for thumbs, and therefore hands.

Gyms: Huh! In a moment of madness two years ago, and at a time when I needed to lose about a stone in weight, I signed up for a gym (and the services of a personal trainer, because I knew absolutely nothing about gyms). Having explained why I thought I needed to go there, a regime was put together for me. I agreed to attend three afternoons a week for two hours each afternoon. I was led through more boring, yet strenuous, exercises than I care to remember; on more pieces of expensive apparatus than I even knew to exist. I worked myself into a lather as I have never done before. I was observed, encouraged, corrected when necessary, praised for both my effort and my regular attendance.

Yet .............. after six months, I had not lost an ounce in weight but had spent a small fortune in fees, and I felt no better than when I started the course (if anything worse!). I told my trainer of this, and he said, "But at least, you're enjoying yourself now, aren't you?"!! What a stupid question: I was NOT enjoying myself at all, the whole six months had been a truly miserable waste of time (and money). I have never seen so many guys with nothing better to do than to strut around the fitness centre, pretending to exercise, or act like the poseurs they were! The personal trainer, admitted that I had given myself entirely to the work outs and that my efforts had not gone un-noticed but, he agreed that there was no point in my continuing if I did not want to. So I didn't!

I have put on nearly two stones in weight in the past twelve months, in spite of vaguely following the Atkins' diet and getting plenty of exercise. It's sitting at this computer thingy night after night that I blame - but the forums are too addictive to let go!

Apologies! That was far more than fivepennyworth ....

Hamish, I lost about 30 pounds in the last year. There's a secret they don't like to talk about because it isn't profitable. Of course you need to get a bit of exercise, a small weight set is about all you need. The rest you get by walking. The secret is push away from the table sooner. If you burn more calories than you take in you are going to lose weight, or at least fat. Remember, lean muscle weighs more than fat. I figure working out and eating less and more balanced meals I lost 30 pounds total. That would mean I lost probably 45 pounds of fat while adding 15 in lean muscle. Higher percentage in lean muscle is good. It really isn't the number of pounds you lose so much as the weight in fat.
