Beyond the pale Colin? No. Try looking at it this way, a tux is a tux is a tux is a tux. Yes, some are double breasted, some are a different cut, some might wear a different style and colour tie,etc., but its basically the same thing being worn to a black tie event. Nothing more nothing less. So why dress up the kilt attire beyond what is necessary for the event? Now, if white tie and tails were the order of dress then we are in an entirely different ball game-----but as I understand it, we are not.

I agree with Jock. If the kilt is acceptable to the organizers of the "black tie" event (and I would be very sure that it was before wearing it), then accessorize as appropriate to the black tie level, not beyond.

Which jacket and waistcoat fits the best? I know the PC is not met with much enthusiasm on this website(I personally see nothing wrong with them), but if it fits the best then wear it. Nothing wrong with wearing the argyll with the PC waist coat either if that is your choice. Unless decorations(medals) are specifically requested then its best to leave them at home. Full marks for the self tie tie! I agree with Amy, those hose should never see the light of day again!

I agree with Jock that there is nothing wrong with a PC and it is definitely correct for black tie. If you want to wear the Argyll, that works too and I still think the lower cut waistcoat from the PC would be better than the higher cut one that came with it. The lower cut waistcoat shows off more of the studs and pleating/piqué of your formal shirt.

I'm not a huge fan of PCs, but in this case it seems most appropriate. Basically, what you're wearing in the first photo (military ball?) would be perfect... sans medals, of course.

Both pics look good to me, like jock says which fits better, and which do you prefer... You're going to stand out regardless...

Wing collar vs regular? I believe with a tux, black tie would call for regular, white tie for wing... I'd break that rule though myself...

That is a nice dirk and somehow I knew you must have one, even though I was wrong about you having made it yourself. Many (most?) people don't recommend them at all -- ever -- for civilian attire, but I don't think they are quite on the same level of anachronism as a flint lock or claymore... I guess the problem remains to find one of those rare occasions when one would be allowed and also to pull off such a bold wardrobe choice without descending into the realm of costume...

Mike's work is amazing. I am lucky to have one. I do wear it probably more often than most as I do Ren Faires and whether you call it garb or a costume it allows me to wear it to several faires that allow weapons. It's just not enough. Hoping to bring it to cut the Haggis some time
