UKen - While I certainly sympathize with your past difficulty with Fed Ex, I feel it incumbent upon me to offer my experience. I worked for many years as an inventory and supply chain manager for an import company moving goods around, to and from Asia and Europe in any combination you can think of. I have to say that my experience with DHL makes Fed Ex look like a dream come true. I can fill the unabridged OED with horror stories involving DHL whilst I can count on one hand any similar experiences with Fed Ex. I would refuse to do business with DHL as much I as I possibly could if I had any other choice.
I'm certainly not attempting to tell you what to do, but you may wish to research reviews of the two companies before committing to a shipping method despite any previously bad experiences.
I hope things go smoothly for you regardless of the method you finally arrive at.

Extensive Field Research regarding FedEx is complete. Reference Exhibit A, all 50-some posts in this thread, describing two back-to-back first-hand experiences with FedEx...

Got word today that my 5 yard casual shipped today, 4 weeks sooner than anticipated. Was delighted to get that bit of news.

Received the kilt today! It shipped Friday, cleared Customs over the weekend, and I had it in my hands at lunch time today (Monday). Well done, DHL.

Ken, I am consideringva similar kilt from Scotweb. Were there any duties that you had to pay? I have never ordered from Scotweb before.
Thank you.

In the last year I've ordered a LOT of stuff from them. That which shipped via FedEx was hit with import duties (though we also had issues with significant delays, with FedEx)... An order that we chose to ship via DHL arrived without invoice for duty (I don't know whether it just slipped through their system or not)... and items that were small enough to ship via Royal Mail were not charged an import duty.
In general, I recommend you ALWAYS budget for import duties. That way, if you get hit, you can afford it. If you don't, then enjoy the saved cash. But if you expect to be "duty free" and get hit, you'll only get upset and be out money you didn't think you'd need to spend.
