If I recall correctly, the colors, and whether the envelope is open or closed, tells what is going on with that thread. A blue envelope is a new thread with no replies. A yellow envelope is a new thread with replies, and a red envelope means a "popular" thread, where there have been more than some number of replies for the past X time period. I don't recall the thresholds for either the number of replies or the time period. I can check if you are really interested. Finally, the envelope can be opened or closed. If it is open, you have read at least part of that thread before. Additionally, you can also see a downward to the left arrow overlayed on the envelope, and that means you have replied to that thread at some point.
