    Irish National Tartan History?......

I remember reading somewhere on this forum, unfortunatly I cannot re-locate the specific thread, That there is a story associated with the Irish National tartan...I was just wondering what that is bing what it is supposed to "represent" or what the person who posted that comment was talking about. Is there a story or did I have an xmarks dream and for some reason it got mixed into my actual memories instead of memories of dreams?

I would be interested to know if there is more to it. As far as I can see it is made up of the colours of the Irish tricolour with some black.
If I wear it in Ireland - North or South - people assume it is a Scottish tartan and I think it was designed about 10 or 15 years ago but it is very nice.

I never researched the history, but I really like my kilt in that tartan.

Irish National was part of the collection of county tartans that House of Edgar (Polly Wittering) designed and registered in late 1995 / early 1996. The colors chosen were done do to represent "the soft rolling hills" of the counties. The colors of the Irish National tartan were based on the flag of Ireland.

In 2004, Another set of Irish County tartans (known as the "County Crest" tartans) were designed and registered by Gaelic Themes and are woven by Marton Mills. The colors chosen for each tartan was based on the design of the crest from each county. The Ireland's National (note the difference... Irish vs. Ireland's) tartan was designed at the same time (along with the Irish American tartan) using the colors of the Irish flag.

Neither collection is "official" as no governing body in Ireland has approved either. Both are very nice in their own right. The collection of County Crest tartans (as well as Ireland's National and Irish American) as woven by Marton Mills have a new owner as of late 2012. The register hasn't been changed to reflect the new owner's name yet, but it's someone you all know.

I think this post says it all.

"Category : Fashion" can't imagine there's much history to it.

That IS its history, flairball, fleshed out in Rocky's post. Most tartans started as 'fashions' in that the designer/weaver liked them and then others liked them, too.

Wow. Rocky and I must have been typing our responses at the same time; his response wasn't there last night. Anyway, I guess there is a bit of history, isn't there? I stand corrected.
