Irish National Tartan History?......

The colors of the Irish National tartan were based on the flag of Ireland.

But they aren't... there's no yellow in the Irish flag. It's green, white, and orange

the collection of county tartans that House of Edgar (Polly Wittering) designed and registered in late 1995 / early 1996. The colors chosen were done do to represent "the soft rolling hills" of the counties.

In 2004, Another set of Irish County tartans (known as the "County Crest" tartans) were designed and registered by Gaelic Themes and are woven by Marton Mills. The colors chosen for each tartan was based on the design of the crest from each county.

Yes I was dismayed when House of Edgar's line of "Irish county tartans" was introduced. They were lovely tartans, well-designed, using very nice colours... but they ignored the colours associated with each county. (Which is important, because GAA is very strong in Ireland and each county's teams wear the county colours.)

So it was fitting and nice that a range of county tartans came out that acknowleged the known county colours.
