What do you/would you wear with tartan trews?

What kind of jackets, waistcoats etc do you/ would you wear with trews? Personally I'm leaning towards an Argyll Jacket and 5 button waistcoat, would this be an acceptable combination for both day and evening wear?

The nice thing with trews is you can wear them with kilt jackets or, as some here like to call them, "Saxon" jackets. Jackets made to be worn with the kilt, though, are shorter and tend to look a little odd when worn with trews. For evening wear, a dinner jacket looks splendid, single breasted or double breasted. Regulation style dublets look great, too, especially if they are made a wee bit longer.

Do you think an argyll jacket would be to short to be worn with fishtail trews then?

If properly fitted, they should be fine. Trews can be worn with kilt jackets. Tartan trousers would be worn with a regular jacket.

What would I wear with tartan trews?
A paper bag over my head in the hope that nobody would recognise me.

I have tartan trews but I have never worn them with my kilt jackets as I would rather wear a kilt. Since I like to use what I have, I have worn them with a sweater, which works well, or sport jacket. The jacket I kept buttoned because the waist is so high on the trews, I think it looks better that way - sort of converting them to trousers. (I am braced for criticism.) However, every time I wore them I received compliments - something that does not happen with my usual attire. Maybe people just like to see tartans worn.

Ok, I was thinking about a pair of made to measure fishtail trews so I guess they'll work with an Argyll jacket and waistcoat then. It would've nice if I could've worn the same jacket and waistcoat with both a kilt and trews.

Whats the general thought on trews in NE Scotland? And why do you think people think like that? Please enlighten me.

I like that you say that you use what you have even though you havent worn them with a kilt jacket yet.

If you want to wear them with a Prince Charlie jacket or a Regulation Doublet then what you want are properly tailored fish-tail trews. If you want to wear them with an Argyle jacket (either a black evening jacket or a tweed day jacket) then you can get by with a pair of tartan trousers made with a high waist. If you want to wear them with an ordinary saxon jacket, then tartan trousers made with either a high waist or a more standard waist are just fine.

I had my tartan trousers made with a high waist line (though a bit lower than where I wear my kilt) and have worn them both with kilt jackets and regular sport coats.

No, and in fact it would definitely look better than a Prince Charlie coatee. But as has been pointed out by others, a longer jacket with turn back cuffs in the Argyle style would be more appropriate and definitely would look better.

Thanks for filling me in on the world of trousers and trews.
